The Neverending Thai Turmoil

  • State of emergency has been implemented in Bangkok and 5 surrounding provinces amidst all the havoc by the red army which heightened when they practically held Asean foreign leaders at ransom during the 14th Asean Summit recently. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva must really have his hands full at the present moment and must also feel a certain dejavu engulfing the friendly Thai people. Hoping do finally put all the unrest behind the devastated country is surely his priority or else he can never get to work on building the crippling economy and restore peace within the nation.

Nevertheless the ungoing unrest will certainly add woes to Thailand’s dwindling tourism which has yet to recover since last year’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport closure. With armored tanks rolling into the streets of Bangkok as I write this, the situation sure does look gloomy unless a compromise can be reached by all parties involved.

If nothing is done, then the UDD or Red Army will most likely succeed in bringing chaos and probably cause the removal of Abhisit as Prime Minister and then the entire cycle will repeat again with the Yellow Army taking over the role of protesters. For someone who loves visiting Thailand and appreciates her warm culture, it saddens me that the good people of Thailand are made to suffer for all this mess. Business owners serving consumers in Bangkok especially will suffer the most I think together with the hotel industry.

I pray this situation will never arise in Malaysia cause there are no winners here… only losers.
