What a match! What a bloody amazing match which ended Chelsea 4 – Liverpool 4! So that means Chelsea made it through to the semi-finals of this year’s Champion’s League but boy did Liverpool put up a strong tantalising performance. At 2 stages, Liverpool just needed 1 more goal to progress but sadly it was not meant to be.
Liverpool started the match strongly and were 2 goals up before the half-hour mark much to the dismay of the large Chelsea fans. At this stage all Liverpool needed was one more goal to seal their place in the semi-finals. Sadly the score stayed the same till half-time although Chelsea did performed with more purpose after Alonso’s second goal via the penalty spot.
Guus Hiddink must have given his multi-millionaire players a superb half-time talk cause they came out with guns blazing and were leading 3-2 after 76mins. After Lampard’s goal, Benitez took out Torres which indicated he might have given up and wanted to keep the talented striker fresh for the Premier League.
Somehow though Liverpool managed to get 2 quick goals from Lucas and Kuyt in a matter of 2 minutes and sent the travelling fans jumping with excitement. Once again they found themselves within a single goal to put them through and kept attacking relentlessly. At this stage, Cech and his defenders were looking shaky.
Luckily Lampard once again scored after some superb build-up play on the right wing on the 89th minute to effectively seal the semi-final berth for Chelsea. All in all though it was a blinking great football match which will go down as one of the best quarter-finals in the history of the Champion’s League.
Of all the 8 goals, I feel Fabio Aurelio’s cheeky free kick goal was the best of the night. As for the man-of-the-match, it is quite hard to pin it on one player when so many players from both side truly played their hearts out. I guess the outstanding stand-out player for me was Drogba and Alonso.
At the end of the day, I sure am glad I stayed up to catch this match and here’s looking forward to tomorrow’s matches.
